10/21/2020 Compare/Contrast Fargo notes & response

For the camerawork, my response was pretty similar to the candidate’s response. Both of us included the change of focus and the crane movement in the beginning and included the camera shots used. We both also discussed the different shots and angles during the husband and wife’s conversation. However, my response was a little more brief compared to the candidate’s response. My response focused more on specific scenes while theirs was more detailed overall. For our camera notes, my notes were generally brief and just small observations while the candidate included many detailed observations.

Both of our responses for sound included some of the same detail. I also included a little more detail in my response than the candidate did. For example, I added the sound of the door creaking a wife’s footsteps in the very beginning that intensified the silence in the video. Both of our responses highlighted the importance of the sound of the washing machine clattering to create suspense and break the silence while the husband and wife argue. The significance of the intense music being played is also included in both our notes and responses. However, the candidate’s response went into more detail on why these specific sounds were included in the videos for example, the candidate added the music’s slow tempo and non-diegetic sounds and their purposes.

The candidate and I both made the same points for the mise-en-scene part of our responses. They both focused on the dull atmosphere of the video and included details of the surroundings and what the audience is introduced with. Our notes were both very detailed while describing our observations. Both the candidate and I included what we noticed about the furniture, the colors, the clothing on the subjects, and the dark tones. However, in the candidate’s response, they described their observations from their notes in a more detailed way and explained why the setting was the way it was.

The editing section of our responses both had around the same idea. The candidate mainly wrote about the transitions of camera shots while my response included how the editing contributed to the dull atmosphere of the video. The candidate’s response did not include much information about the editing, but she did make a good point on the monotonous sound and slow pace pattern which my response did not have. Our notes included similar observations such as the fading into another setting and the long-lasting scenes.
